Create Videos with your Document Camera

This has definitely been a hot topic;  Using your document cameras to film videos.

This pertains only to the Samsung SPD850DX Document Camera.  For the document camera USB viewer tutorial, you can find that here:

Document Camera Basics

Things to remember while filming video with your document camera:

  • If it is other than your desktop, remove the magnifying lens and store it in the clear case.

  • "No Compression" will create a HUGE file.  MPEG-4 will most likely suit your needs.

  • Windows Movie Maker will most likely be able to edit either video format.

  • If you want to record sound, you will need to talk to your School Tech if you do not have the audio driver.

  • You will need your own microphone.

  • You are forced to name your video BEFORE it actually starts.  So don't tell your students to "GO!" right as you push the capture button, you must name it first.

Most important of all:

Upload to WeberTube!

Share your cool videos!  Of course we have to mention this, please follow the safety and appropriate guidelines when filming your students and putting them online.

Here's the 5 minute reference video.  Again, these aren't meant to replace any formal training, they're just a reference.

  1. Great tutorial! The document cameras sure are powerful video making tools. And after creating these videos with your document camera, it's great to upload them to WeberTube, and let other teachers know what you're doing in your classroom. As always, when filming students, get parental waivers first if you're going to share them on your blog or WeberTube, and never mention students by name if they happen to be on the camera at the same time.
