N Drive: Find your files

Have your files and folders gone missing from the N drive? Chances are, they've just been moved accidentally to a new location. This will show you how to find them.

The N drive is a great tool for you to access each other's files. The down side is, everybody (including students) can access these files, move them, edit them, and even delete them. Currently there is no security available that could restrict access to this drive without making your day a password/security nightmare for your students.

The #1 answer to what happened to your folder? It was dropped into another. It's still there, we've just got to "cut and paste" it back to where it was. Hopefully the following screenshots will help explain.

Currently, a typical layout would be something like this; Grades 1 through 6, possibly including Kindergarten, as the picture depicts below:

1-6

***************************************************************************************

So, when you or a student go to open the "04" folder, you'd double click, right? Now if you are a little "slow on the draw", or you accidentally drag the 04 folder into the 02 folder between your first and second click. I've tried to capture a shot of this below;

drag

******************************************************************************************

Now, the 04 folder looks like it's missing or deleted, but it's really just been "drag and dropped" into the 02 folder:

***************************************************************************************

So if we go into the 02 folder, we can see the 04 folder has been moved there:

02

***************************************************************************************

This can be frustrating, because it's VERY hard to determine who or how this happened. 99% of the time, this is how it happened. So, now what do you do?

Unfortunately, most people just create the folder again, doing all that work over. Now there's another problem; there is a duplicate 04 folder. You've got one here in the wrong place, AND you've created a new one where it originally started. Here's what you should do when you see it's been moved. Cut and Paste the 04 folder out of the 02, and back to the main N drive folder where it was. If you COPY, it will leave a copy still in the 02 location, and paste another one, so you want to CUT so it removes it completely from the wrong location, and into the right.

cut

***************************************************************************************

So, cut it from the 02 folder, hit the BACK arrow, and PASTE it back into the main N drive location.

paste

***************************************************************************************

And there it is, it's back.

When you can't find it in any other "bordering" folders, you can always go hit the Start Button & Search. Just type in the name of the folder, or better yet, a name of a specific file.

search

***************************************************************************************

Remember to search within the N drive:

n search

***************************************************************************************

Look how many times the 04 folder has been moved, and then rebuilt! This is now in 20 different locations at this certain school. Now we will have to find some way to merge all of those into one folder, choosing which files are up to date and which ones can be deleted.

04 search

***************************************************************************************

If you are wondering which files are more current, you can always view the Date Modified in the "details" view.

04 date

***************************************************************************************

I know that many of you are experiencing issues like this. Please feel free to type in a question or response here so we can discuss this further.

Thanks.

:)
