Running out of ink?

Is that old printer running out of ink - again? Before you run to the store and buy another 5 year supply of printer ink, you should read this first.

That old printer that you have may not have that much life left in it. So when you buy some new ink, the cartridge may actually out last the printer, and you're stuck with a few unopened cartridges that you may not be able to return for a refund.

Here's a trick I've done in the past several years, shhhh, don't tell anybody. ;)

Take a look at the ink prices. The black averages $15 - $20, and the color at around $25 - $30. The older your printer is, the harder it may be to find the right stuff, and it may even be more expensive.

Now, have you seen the prices of new printers? Remember, prices vary at different locations, but here's the secret....

NEW PRINTERS USUALLY INCLUDE THE INK - and you can buy them for under $40!!!

Yes, that's right, you can get a NEW printer, with INK, for less than it costs to buy a color and a black ink cartridge. (depending on the model)

This model is an ALL IN ONE unit, priced at $34, and yes it comes with ink!

Disclaimer..... Prices vary. You'll find specials online, or locally. Some printers may not include the ink.

You should also know that most printers NO LONGER SUPPLY the USB cable. You have to get these yourself, and they usually cost under $10.

This one is $7.68 online at www.walmart.com

So, if you have a printer at least 2 years old (yes, that is old now!) and you are running out of ink, just remember to weigh your options. If you buy ink, how long will your printer last? I see a printer go bad probably every week. You can spend about the same amount of money on a brand new printer, and just plan on replacing it once a year instead of only your ink.I usually buy my printers at WalMart, yes they are cheap, simple printers but that's all I need.

One more note. The Tech department is not required to support all kinds of printers. Basically, our only requirement is to support the network printers, but we can try to help you out where we can. I would suggest looking for HP products. But if this is for your home, go wild. 8)

Thanks

  2. Is cheaper better? Consider the declining quality of printers (they only last 2 years!) driven by this tactic and the increasing landfills. Consider the environmental cost or maybe in corporate speak, the total opportunity cost including system (earth) damage. I'll nurse my old printer as long as I can, buying a cartridge (on my way, no special trip taken) as needed.

I recycle the cartridges for $3 at OfficeMax too.

  3. Thanks for the info. I am always needing to be reminded of what is considered 'old' and out of date in the computer world. My sneakers stay in fashion longer than the computer stuff stays current!

  4. ha ha.

It's amazing how fast things get outdated. In fact, I keep waiting for the day when we will no longer need to print ANYTHING.

There are so many options today to go wireless. In fact, I haven't used my home printer in over a year, it's not even connected to the computer.

There a lot of programs for business offices that can bypass the fax machine, letting the message go right to their email, and even SENDING a fax right from the computer so no paper is needed.

    One of these days....

  6. Most of the ink cartridges included with new printers are "starter" cartridges and are not full.

  7. Hi Justin-

You said that some businesses will recycle my old printer. Where can I find these businesses? My ink is going to cost about $50. No way! So I need to get a new printer but I don't know what to do with my old printer...
    Thanks!
