This Program won't close!!!

Have you ever been in GradeQuick, you see an error pop up, and there's no way to close or stop it? This can also apply to other programs that have a hard time closing. There are some games like this installed in the PC lab that won't close easily if the student doesn't follow the right steps.

Here is the BEST way to end these types of programs WITHOUT logging out or shutting your computer off.

Like that GQ error, it shouldn't happen that often, BUT when you get a box that has no "X" or OK button to close it, here are 2 methods you can choose from.

  • Ctrl+Alt+Del (Control Alt Delete) Hold in all 3 buttons at the same time, only for a second though. Press it only once. If it doesn't pop immediately up, have patience, but the box should show pretty quick on the WSD computers. This is one option.

Sorry for the blurry cell phone camera shot...

When the box pops up (on WSD computers) it will be the only thing you see. Hit the "Task List" button on the lower center. This will bring up your "Windows Task Manager" box.

  • The SECOND option (only if you don't like the first option) is to RIGHT CLICK on your task bar at the bottom. Don't click on the window boxes, just on a blank part of the gray bar. Click on Task Manager.

The two methods shown above will get you to the same place.... The Windows Task Manager, which is shown below. You MAY have to click the Applications tab on the top left if it doesn't already open there.

This will show you all of the windows you have open. Most of you may use this for GradeQuick if it has an error and won't let you close. You will see it in the list there.

Once you select the program and End Task, the program will begin to shut down. You may see an additional popup box asking you to End Now, or Cancel. Select End Now.

That's it. That is how to close a program that is either "not responding", you can't stop the popups, or you just can't see any other way to close it.

Of course, this is not the preferred way to close a program. When possible, always save and close through the proper methods.

Thanks.

  3. One more thought, this same method can be used at home to end a program as well. You just won't get that Novell screen, but you will still get the Windows Task Manager.
